July 23  "Playing Indian" at Adirondack Children's Camps – Program presented at the Old Forge Library  at 7pm by Hallie E. Bond, Curator at the Adirondack Museum at Blue Mt. since 1987. Suggested donation - $3. Have you ever wondered why children's camps are so, well - Indian? Do Wah-Na-Gi and Hoh-Wa-Tah really mean anything in any known native language? Children's camps often have totem poles, "war canoes," and council fires. And then there are the camp people like "Chief" Abbott who founded the Adirondack Woodcraft Camps and "Chief" Beckman who directed Camp Dudley for forty years. A simple explanation is that Americans have always liked to "play" Indian. This program will offer a more complete answer, glimpses of Adirondack history and information about one of the country's most interesting youth leaders.  Sponsored by the Town of Webb Historical Association in conjunction with the current exhibit “Camp Memories – Youth Camps” on display until October 31, 2009.

March 2010

March 12 St. Paddy's Parade - 5pm down Main Street in Old Forge.  This is a "don't miss" event!  This is the best (and only) Irish Parade in the Adirondacks. Creativity is always the main theme of this parade. Along with the usual participants, many groups are secretly making costumes and floats that will be a surprise for this year’s parade. Individuals now try to outdo their prior year’s costumes or floats. Parade favorites return year after year.  Local pickups with snowplows will entertain while in formation, under the name Synchronized Snowplows. The Old Forge Redheads group will be there, as will the Old Forge Irish Setters Club (which still has many dogs, but no Irish Setters). The Precision Shopping Carts will again be weaving their formations up Main Street, in spite of the poor physical conditioning of the pushers!  After the parade, everyone is welcome at The Old Forge Fire Hall to sample Irish Stews that are made by local residents, and are judged for Best Irish Stew by the public. Soda bread and green beverages are also offered to everyone free of charge.

March 13-14 Snofest - By mid-March many snowmobilers start putting away their sleds and start thinking about summer. Not in Old Forge, NY! The four major dealers: Ski Doo, Yamaha, Polaris, and Arctic Cat will premier their 2011 models, offering demo rides, weather permitting. Thousands of snowmobile enthusiasts take advantage of this opportunity to be the first to preview next year’s line of sleds and gear.  Gates to the North Street Recreation Center will be open on Saturday from 9am to 9pm, and on Sunday from 10am to 4pm. Admission is free. There will be Freestyle Snocross Shows all three days, with a Back-Flip Fireworks Finale on Saturday at 7pm.  Signage will indicate designated parking areas and shuttle busses will be running to transport event goers. Snofest 2010 is brought to you by the Central Adirondack Association.  For more information, contact the Old Forge Visitor Information Center at 315-369-6983 or visit the website www.SnoFestNY.com.
